ANTONI TÀPIES (1923 in Barcelona – February 6, 2012, in Barcelona) was a Spanish painter, graphic artist, and sculptor. He was considered the most important Spanish artist of the Informalism movement. In 2010, he was granted the hereditary title of Marquis of Tàpies.
Tàpies was particularly interested in materiality, signs, and abstract forms. He often used unusual materials in his works, such as sand, earth, or marble dust. His paintings often have a rough, textured appearance and feature crosses, letters, numbers, or other simple symbols.
His art was strongly influenced by the political and social conditions of Spain under Franco. Tàpies wanted his art to address not only aesthetic issues but also spiritual and social questions.
From the 1950s onwards, Tàpies became internationally recognized. He exhibited in many countries and received numerous important awards. He remained artistically active until his death in 2012. Today, Antoni Tàpies is regarded as one of the most important Spanish artists of modern art.
