Paas Jürgen

Jürgen Paas (*1958 in Krefeld) developed an early interest in the visual arts. He studied fine arts from the early to the late 1980s at the Hochschule in Essen, where he was taught by artists including László Lakner, Rudolf Vombek, Friedrich Gräsel, and Franz Rudolf Knubel. During this period, he established a strong foundation in both painting and spatial thinking, while developing an independent approach to form and structure.
In the early 1990s, Paas expanded his artistic perspective through a period of study at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris, where he worked in the class of Jan Voss. This experience exposed him to international artistic positions and further deepened his interest in color as an active, spatial force within the image. Paas has lived and worked in Essen since the early 1980s. Alongside his own artistic practice, he was engaged in teaching for many years at various academic institutions. In his teaching, he emphasized experimental approaches and encouraged students to develop individual artistic strategies grounded in both practice and reflection.
His artistic work encompasses painting, drawing, and sculptural objects. It is characterized by a reduced visual language, precise use of color, and an ongoing engagement with geometric structures. Often working in series, Paas explores subtle variations and shifts that create tension between order and disruption, system and openness. Jürgen Paas has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions in Germany and internationally. His works are included in public and private collections, and his career has been recognized through numerous grants and awards. Exhibition catalogues and publications document his work and underline his sustained contribution to contemporary art.
